Ehemaliger NFL-Spieler übernimmt als Liga-Präsident mit einem klaren Ziel: eine echte professionelle Liga „made in Europe“
Innsbruck, 28. August 2026 – Markus Kuhn wurde zum Präsidenten der European Football Alliance (EFA) ernannt. Der ehemalige NFL-Spieler und Sportmanager übernimmt die Position mit sofortiger Wirkung. Sein Vertrag läuft zunächst über mindestens drei Jahre. Kuhn berichtet direkt an das Board of Governors der Liga.
Die Liga gab die Ernennung kurz vor ihrem letzten Spiel im Rahmen des Championship Weekends bekannt und markiert damit zugleich den erfolgreichen Abschluss der ersten EFA-Saison.
„Es hat noch nie eine echte professionelle American-Football-Liga ‚made in Europe‘ gegeben. Genau das wollen wir schaffen“, sagt Markus Kuhn. „Die EFA bietet dafür die bestmöglichen Voraussetzungen. Gleichzeitig müssen wir anerkennen, dass wir noch nicht dort sind, wo eine professionelle Liga sein muss – weder auf dem Spielfeld noch in den Strukturen dahinter. Genau das macht diese Aufgabe so spannend. Ich freue mich darauf, gemeinsam mit einem starken Team und der American-Football-Community in Europa etwas aufzubauen.“
Bottom-up statt Top-down
Kuhn hat sich bewusst für die EFA und ihr Ligamodell entschieden. Die Franchises sind Anteilseigner der Liga, verfügen über Stimmrechte und treffen sämtliche strategischen Entscheidungen gemeinsam über das Board of Governors – eine Struktur, die sich am Modell der NFL orientiert, bei dem die Teams die Liga unterstützen und nicht umgekehrt. Frühere europäische Liga-Projekte waren zentral organisiert und konnten dadurch keinen nachhaltigen Erfolg erzielen.
„Wir haben diese Liga gegründet, weil wir davon überzeugt sind, dass sie den Clubs gehören muss“, sagt Jörg Zirener, Miteigentümer von Frankfurt Galaxy. „Mit Markus Kuhn gewinnt dieses Modell einen Präsidenten, der beide Seiten versteht: den Sport auf höchstem Niveau und das dahinterstehende Business. Er hat sich nicht nur aus eigener Kraft vom College bis in die NFL gearbeitet, sondern auch viele Jahre auf der Business-Seite großer NFL-Teams verbracht. Diese Kombination hat dem American Football in Europa bisher gefehlt. Wir freuen uns auf die Zusammenarbeit mit ihm!“
Sportliche Qualität, professionelle Strukturen und echte Fan-Beteiligung
Kuhn möchte beide Seiten der Liga weiterentwickeln: das Produkt auf dem Spielfeld und die geschäftlichen Strukturen dahinter. Auf sportlicher Ebene soll das Spielniveau durch in den USA ausgebildete Spieler sowie die besten europäischen Talente deutlich angehoben werden. Auf organisatorischer Seite liegt der Fokus auf der Professionalisierung der Ligastrukturen, insbesondere in den Bereichen Sport, Marketing und Fan Experience.
„Unser Ziel muss es sein, unseren besten Spielern mittelfristig die Möglichkeit zu geben, NFL-Verträge zu erhalten“, sagt Kuhn. „Um das zu erreichen, müssen wir den Sport in ganz Europa gemeinsam mit der NFL, der IFAF und den nationalen Verbänden weiterentwickeln. Gleichzeitig müssen wir die Fans auf diesem Weg mitnehmen. Sie sollen die Liga nicht nur verfolgen, sondern sie aktiv mitgestalten. Auch hier werden wir völlig neue Wege gehen.“
Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt wird auf der Stärkung der lokalen Präsenz der Clubs in ihren jeweiligen Märkten liegen. Die EFA ist derzeit in Deutschland, Österreich, Frankreich, Tschechien und Dänemark vertreten. London sowie möglicherweise weitere Standorte sollen 2027 hinzukommen. Eine von Europa aus geführte Liga mit Clubs, die fest in ihren lokalen Gemeinschaften verwurzelt sind, sei laut Kuhn entscheidend für die nachhaltige Entwicklung des American Footballs in Europa.
„Die Ernennung von Markus Kuhn ist ein wichtiger Schritt bei der Professionalisierung der Liga. Seine Erfahrung und sein Netzwerk werden der EFA weiteren Rückenwind geben. Ich freue mich darauf, gemeinsam mit ihm an der Zukunft des American Footballs in Europa zu arbeiten“, erklärt Eric Reutemann, CEO von Frankfurt Galaxy. Reutemann hatte in der ersten Saison die Leitung der Liga inne und innerhalb weniger Monate erfolgreich die operativen Strukturen der Liga aufgebaut.
Über Markus Kuhn
Markus Kuhn, geboren 1986 in Mannheim, begann seine Karriere bei den Weinheim Longhorns in der German Football League. 2007 wechselte er in die USA, wo er fünf Jahre College Football an der North Carolina State University spielte und gleichzeitig einen Abschluss in Betriebswirtschaftslehre erwarb.
2012 wurde er von den New York Giants gedraftet. 2014 wurde er zum ersten in Deutschland geborenen Spieler, der in der NFL einen Touchdown erzielte. Nach vier Saisons bei den New York Giants wurde er von den New England Patriots verpflichtet.
Nach rund zehn Jahren als Spieler in den USA verbrachte Kuhn weitere zehn Jahre im Sportbusiness und baute eigene Unternehmen auf. Zu seinen Erfahrungen zählen unter anderem ein Masterabschluss in Sportmanagement an der Columbia University in New York, Tätigkeiten bei der NFL und der NFL Players Association (NFLPA) sowie Positionen auf der Sportbusiness-Seite der New York Giants und New England Patriots. Seit 2017 ist er zudem als NFL-Analyst im deutschen Fernsehen tätig.

Die European Football Alliance ist eine professionelle American-Football-Liga in Europa, die ihren Clubs gehört und von diesen getragen wird. Die Franchises sind Anteilseigner der Liga und treffen gemeinsam Entscheidungen über Budget, Lizenzierung und Expansion.
In der Saison 2026 treten sechs Teams aus fünf Ländern in der EFA an: Frankfurt Galaxy, Munich Ravens, Nordic Storm (Kopenhagen), Paris Musketeers, Prague Lions und Raiders Tirol. London wurde als neues Team für 2027 angekündigt.

Former NFL player takes over as league president with a clear goal: a true professional league “made in Europe”
Innsbruck, August 28, 2026 – Markus Kuhn has been appointed President of the European Football Alliance (EFA). The former NFL player and sports executive assumes the position with immediate effect. His contract runs for at least three years. Kuhn reports directly to the league’s Board of Governors. The league made the announcement shortly before its final game as part of the Championship Weekend, marking the successful conclusion of the EFA’s first season. “There has never been a true professional American football league ‘made in Europe’.
That is exactly what we aspire to create,” says Markus Kuhn. “The EFA offers the best possible conditions for this. At the same time, we have to acknowledge that we are not yet where a professional league needs to be – neither on the field nor in the structures behind it. That is what makes this task so exciting. I look forward to building it together with a strong team and the American football community in Europe.”
Bottom-up rather than top-down
Kuhn deliberately chose the EFA and its league model. The franchises are shareholders in the league, hold voting rights and make all strategic decisions jointly through the Board of Governors – a structure modeled after the NFL, in which the teams support the league rather than the other way around. Previous European league projects were organised centrally and consequently failed to achieve sustainable success. “We founded this league because we are convinced that it must belong to the clubs,” says Jörg Zirener, co-owner of Frankfurt Galaxy.
“With Markus Kuhn, this model gains a leader who understands both sides: the sport at the highest level and the business behind it. Not only did he work his way from college to the NFL through his own efforts, but he also spent many years working on the sports-business side of major NFL teams. That combination is exactly what American football in Europe has been missing. We look forward to working with him!”
Sporting quality, professional structures and genuine fan engagement
Kuhn intends to develop both sides of the league: the product on the field and the business operations behind it. On the sporting side, the goal is to significantly raise the level of play through players trained in the United States and the best European talent. On the organisational side, the focus will be on professionalising the league’s structures, particularly in the areas of sport, marketing and fan experience. “Our goal must be to give our best players the opportunity to earn NFL contracts in the medium term,” says Kuhn.
“To achieve this, we need to develop the sport throughout Europe, together with the NFL, IFAF and the national federations. And we have to bring the fans along with us. They should not just watch the league; they should help shape it. Here, we will break entirely new ground.” Another key focus will be strengthening the clubs’ local presence in their respective markets. The EFA currently operates in Germany, Austria, France, the Czech Republic and Denmark. London and potentially additional locations will be added in 2027. According to Kuhn, a league led from Europe with clubs deeply rooted in their local communities is essential for the sustainable development of American football in Europe. “The appointment of Markus Kuhn is an important step in the professionalisation of the league. His experience and network will give the EFA further momentum. I look forward to working together for the future of American football in Europe,” explains Eric Reutemann, CEO of the Frankfurt Galaxy who has served as head of the league in its first season and successfully established league operations within just a few months.
